Introduction
Onions have shallow, densely-packed root systems and are grown at much tighter spacing than tomatoes, which changes the drip irrigation layout considerably even when the water source stays the same. This article sets out a practical layout and equipment list for irrigating 1 acre (≈4,000 m²) of onions using dripline with 10–15 cm dripline emitter spacing, with water supplied entirely by gravity from a tank on a 2-metre stand. The spacing recommendation has been checked directly against KALRO's official onion production guidance.
KALRO Verification
KALRO's onion Technologies, Innovations and Management Practices (TIMPs) publication specifies that onion seedlings should be transplanted at 30 cm between rows and 8–10 cm between plants (under furrow irrigation). This official spacing directly supports the requested design change:
- Dripline emitter spacing of 10 cm matches KALRO's 8–10 cm in-row plant spacing almost exactly, placing one emitter at (or within 2 cm of) every plant.
- 15 cm emitter spacing remains an acceptable, more economical alternative — each emitter then serves roughly 1.5 plants through lateral soil wetting, which is standard practice in Kenyan commercial onion drip layouts, though it departs slightly further from KALRO's tightest recommended plant spacing than the 10 cm option does.
- Dripline lateral (row) spacing of 30 cm, used in the layout below, matches KALRO's 30 cm row spacing exactly, so each dripline lateral runs directly beneath a single row of onions rather than serving two rows by lateral wetting.
This is a closer, KALRO-aligned revision of a wider-spaced layout: the previous version of this plan used 40 cm lateral spacing and 20 cm emitter spacing, both of which were looser than KALRO's published figures. The layout below corrects both to match KALRO's transplanting spacing.
The Pressure Reality of a 2-Metre Stand
A 2-metre water column produces roughly 0.2 bar (≈2.9 psi) of static pressure before any losses from pipe friction, fittings, or filtration. Moving to KALRO-matched 30 cm lateral spacing and 10 cm emitter spacing increases both the number of laterals and the number of emitters per acre substantially compared to a wider-spaced layout — meaning more total flow demand on the same limited head. Three design principles follow:
- Short lateral runs, kept to about 20 m, so friction loss does not consume the available head.
- Larger header and sub-main pipes than a wider-spaced layout would need, to comfortably carry the higher total flow generated by the denser lateral and emitter spacing.
- Smaller irrigation cycles. With close to 700 laterals across the acre, even zoned irrigation needs to be split further — into half-zone cycles — to keep flow and pressure adequate at the far end of each run.

Practical Recommendations
- Position the tank stand at the field's centre-edge to minimise mainline length and preserve head.
- Filter before the mainline, not after — install the screen/disc filter directly at the tank outlet.
- Irrigate in half-zone sub-cycles. At 30 cm lateral spacing and 10 cm emitter spacing, each zone now carries roughly 167 laterals — nearly double the lateral count of a wider-spaced layout — so splitting each zone into two sub-cycles of about 84 laterals is advisable to keep adequate flow with only ~0.2 bar available.
- Choose non-pressure-compensating dripline rated for low-head operation, since pressure-compensating dripline typically needs more head than a 2-metre stand supplies.
- Budget for significantly more dripline per acre at KALRO-matched spacing — roughly 13,360 m compared to under 10,000 m at a wider 40 cm/20 cm layout.
- If yields or plot size grow, raise the stand. A 2.5–3 m stand roughly doubles available head, which matters more here than in a wider-spaced layout given the higher total emitter count per zone.
Conclusion
Matching dripline spacing to KALRO's official onion transplanting guidance — 30 cm between rows and 10 cm between emitters — gives the most agronomically accurate irrigation coverage for onions on a Kenyan smallholding, at the cost of a denser, higher-flow-demand system than a wider-spaced layout. A 2-metre gravity stand can still deliver this design in practice, provided zoning is tightened into half-zone sub-cycles, filtration is properly installed at the tank outlet, and pipe sizing is upsized slightly to carry the additional flow the closer spacing requires.
